Social Housing in a Rural Context

The project created new homes for frail and vulnerable elderly people at affordable rents, including 22 (one and two bed) apartments and 4 (two bed) bungalows. The scheme is part of an existing elderly community, which included the upgrade of the common room, which functions as the social hub for the overall Whitefriars development.

The overall design strategy elevates the importance of social interaction between residents. This is seen as a fundamental way of combatting the issue of loneliness in old age. The winter gardens, the circulation spaces and the central garden have all been designed to maximise this opportunity. Beech Gardens is an exemplary project which successfully incorporates HAPPI principles, which focus on environmental quality, health and wellbeing. The completed building has tangibly improved the quality of life for the people that live there.
